Hospitality Management in the Theme Park Industry in Japan
In 2001, the first year of the new century, Universal Studio Japan(USJ) was opened in March in Osaka, and in September Tokyo Disney Resort was completed with the addition of Tokyo Disney Sea, constructed by Oriental Land Co.,Ltd. which runs TDL. There are plans to construct other new large-sized theme parks, including Lotte World Tokyo, Tezuka Osamu World, Lego Land Makuhari and Fantasy World. Thus, it is clear that the theme park industry will continue to be a focus of attention. I would like here to discuss the beginning and history of the theme park industry. Using the example of TDL, Japan’s most successful theme park, we will look at the structural elements of theme parks, as well as entertainment and hospitality, and consider the present situation problems and direction of Japanese theme parks in the future.
